Friday, November 11, 2016 is Veterans Day. Campuses throughout Paris ISD have scheduled special Veterans Day activities so students can learn about the valuable contributions of our veterans.
LAMAR COUNTY HEAD START
Staff and students will wear red, white and blue to celebrate the flag. The campus will gather on the parking lot to raise the flag and Director Eva Williams will sing “God Bless America.” Students will engage in patriotic art activities.
T. G. GIVENS EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER
Mr. Lopez will visit each class and talk about the flag and teach students to salute. Mr. Reeves will work with students during art class to create a school mural to present to Veteran or Military person.
AIKIN ELEMENTARY
Students are encouraged to invite a Veteran to eat lunch with them. Classroom teachers will have Veterans Day activities and lessons planned. Fourth graders will write letters to local veterans and will place flags at the front entrance.
JUSTISS ELEMENTARY
A Veterans Day Program will be held at 9:00 a.m. to honor veterans who are staff members and veterans who are family members of students and staff. Mrs. White's 2nd grade class will perform patriotic songs and Am​a​ri Lawrence​, 4th grader, will sing the National Anthem. ​Student Council will present ​​United States flags to each veteran. The​ "Soldier's Creed" ​will be ​read by Army veteran and Paris ISD employee​, Eddie Elmore and ​his ​grandson, 2nd grader Kai Furtch. The colors will be posted and retired​ by a local Boy Scout Troop​ and TAPS will be played by Bryce Mills. Students will wear a decorated and labeled STAR with the name of the Veteran they are honoring. The Annual Justiss Elementary Veterans Day Breakfast, hosted by the Student Council, will immediately follow in the library for honored guests.
CROCKETT INTERMEDIATE
Students will participate in various activities during Social Studies classes. Some activities include letters to Veterans and videos about the history of the military and Veterans Day.
PARIS JUNIOR HIGH
Students will participate in various activities during Social Studies classes. The 8th grade Social Studies classes will go to the Veteran’s Memorial at Love Civic Center. There will be a moment of silence in honor of veterans. Staff members who are veterans will be honored during the day. CaTV will show a video in honor of all veterans.
PARIS HIGH SCHOOL
Students will observe a moment of silence at 8:15 to honor all past, present and future armed service personnel. Kim Ekstrom (a veteran) will make an announcement about what Veterans Day means to her. Matthew Cochran will play Taps over the intercom. American flags will be displayed outside. Students will write names of family members who are veterans or currently serving in the military on a poster that will be displayed in the Commons Area along with a flag and spray of flowers. A banner for students to sign who plan on becoming a part of the military will be on display. BlueTube will have a Veterans Day production that will be shown during all lunch periods.
TRAVIS HIGH SCHOOL OF CHOICE
A veteran will be guest speaker and a moment of silence will be held for all servicemen and women who have served and for those who lost their lives serving. A Veterans Memorial Board will be on display.
