Paris High School students learning through community service

Lamar County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Joey McCarthy saw a trailer mounted smoker in the county impound lot and saw potential.  McCarthy wanted a smoker to help build positive interaction with the community. He contacted Ag Science Instructor Steve Tucker at Paris High School and requested assistance with the community building project.

Tucker’s Ag Mechanics class took on the rehabilitation starting with cleaning out the smoker that had been used to burn paper.  Once the smoker was cleaned, the class removed rust, repaired the cooking racks and fire box, and repaired loose welds.  After painting the unit, the students installed new wheels and tires on the trailer.

This collaborative effort will benefit the community.  The Paris High School students had the opportunity to apply their skills to a worthy project and the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office received a tool they can use to expand their outreach in the county.

Quick Tip Information

Quick Tip is a support system that allows students to communicate with school administrators. While the district already has many programs to help students deal with challenges such as bullying behaviors, stress, peer pressure, and family problems, Quick Tip helps break the code of silence often experienced by students because it allows them to report concerns to administrators anonymously.

Submit from App
SchoolMessenger Quick Tip app is available for both iOS (iTunes App Store) and Android devices (Google Play). Download SchoolMessenger Quick Tip App. When launching the app for the first time, you will be prompted to enter the school district code. The school district code is paristx.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is not a crisis line. In cases of emergency, the site will direct students to call 911!
