Aikin Elementary School third grader Eli Allen earned a perfect score of 20 in the third of three meets in this year’s WordMasters Challenge, a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually. Only 68 third graders nationwide achieved this result.
Other Aikin students who achieved outstanding results of 19 out of 20 include third graders Hannah Cunningham and Chelbi Crowell. The students were coached in preparation for the competition by Socrates teacher Tammy King.
The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. The challenge is the nation’s longest-running language arts competition for students in grades 3 - 8.
