Paris High School held a heartfelt celebration yesterday to honor Veterans, bringing together students, staff, and special guests for a memorable program. The event was designed to recognize the sacrifices and contributions of military personnel, with a variety of activities dedicated to showing appreciation.
A moving feature of the event was the Missing Man’s Table, set as a symbolic tribute to those who are missing in action, fallen or imprisoned. This powerful gesture served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have not returned home.
The program included moving musical performances. The PHS Choir delivered a stirring rendition of "God Bless the USA," filling the gymnasium with patriotic spirit. Meanwhile, the PHS Blue Blazes Band played the Military Hymns for each branch of the armed forces. As each hymn was played, Veterans from the respective branch stood, receiving recognition and applause from the audience.
The highlight of the event was the speech by Johnny Williams, a US Navy Veteran and proud PHS graduate. Williams shared his experiences of serving in the military, providing students with insight into the life and duties of a service member. His stories and reflections offered a personal connection to the broader theme of service and sacrifice.
The program concluded with a solemn and respectful performance of "Taps" by PHS senior Gavin Avery on his trumpet. The haunting notes of the bugle call provided a fitting end to the ceremony, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees.
At the entrance of Paris High School, an inspiring display of 28 flags stands proudly, each representing a veteran and symbolizing our unwavering commitment to serve those who have sacrificed so much for our country. This meaningful tribute is part of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) initiative known as the Field of Flags. This initiative is not only a powerful visual tribute but also serves as a fundraiser to support veterans and their families. Funds raised help aid ill and injured veterans, ensuring they receive the care and support they need. By contributing to this cause, community members are playing an active role in enhancing the lives of those who have served our nation.
