PARIS ISD VETERANS DAY ACTIVITIES

November 11, 2015 is Veterans Day.  Please wear red, white and blue to honor  those who have served and currently serve in our military forces.

Campuses throughout Paris ISD have scheduled special Veterans Day activities so students can learn about the valuable contributions of our veterans.  The day provides some very teachable moments especially when community members are invited to the schools to present to the students and be honored at the same time.  Community members are invited to all ceremonies and are encouraged to help students celebrate Veterans Day. If your student’s campus is not listed, please consult with your campus for possible plans. Scheduled activities include:

LAMAR COUNTY HEAD START

Staff and students will wear red, white and blue to celebrate the flag. The campus will gather on the parking lot to raise the flag and students will sing “America (My Country ’Tis of Thee)” and students will engage in patriotic art activities.

T. G. GIVENS EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER

Mr. Lopez will visit each class and talk about the flag and teach students to salute. Mr. Thadieus Jones, Givens weekly volunteer, will visit each class and talk to the students about what it means to be a veteran.

AIKIN ELEMENTARY

An additional moment of silence will be held during morning announcements to introduce Veterans Day and what it means. Students are encouraged to invite a Veteran to each lunch with them. Teachers will have Veterans Day activities and lessons planned in classrooms.

JUSTISS ELEMENTARY

A Veterans Day Assembly will be held at 9:00 a.m. in the cafeteria honoring veterans who are family members of Justiss students or staff, as well as any staff that are veterans. Students will honor any other family members or friends who are veterans by remembering them on placards decorated and carried to the assembly.  Justiss Socrates students will perform a short play titled "A Veterans Day Play." The Annual Justiss Elementary Veterans Day breakfast, hosted by the Justiss Student Council, will immediately follow in the library for all honored guests and their families.

CROCKETT INTERMEDIATE

Students will participate in various activities during Social Studies classes.  Some activities include letters to Veterans and videos about the history of the military and Veterans Day.

PARIS JUNIOR HIGH

Students will observe and honor Veterans Day through their AMA classes. We will show a video during AMA for all students and students will make cards to send to current enlisted servicemen. We will begin a collection for care packages to send to these active duty servicemen for the holidays.

PARIS HIGH SCHOOL

Students will observe a moment of silence at 8:15 to honor all past, present and future armed service personnel. Mrs. Ekstrom (a veteran) will make an announcement about what Veterans Day means to her. A student will play Taps over the intercom. The doors of teachers and staff members who are veterans will be decorated by the National Honor Society and Student Council. The flags will be put out around the school.  A video about Veterans Day will be played during every lunch period.  Students will write names of family members who are Veterans or in the military on a poster that will be displayed in the Commons Area along with a flag and spray of flowers. A banner for students who plan on becoming a part of the military will be on display.

TRAVIS HIGH SCHOOL

Students are making and mailing cards to veterans at the veterans hospital. A moment of silence will be held at 8:00 a.m. for all servicemen and women who have served and lost their lives serving.  A poster with the names of all the students' family members who have or who are now serving will be on display.

Quick Tip Information

Quick Tip is a support system that allows students to communicate with school administrators. While the district already has many programs to help students deal with challenges such as bullying behaviors, stress, peer pressure, and family problems, Quick Tip helps break the code of silence often experienced by students because it allows them to report concerns to administrators anonymously.

Submit from App
SchoolMessenger Quick Tip app is available for both iOS (iTunes App Store) and Android devices (Google Play). Download SchoolMessenger Quick Tip App. When launching the app for the first time, you will be prompted to enter the school district code. The school district code is paristx.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is not a crisis line. In cases of emergency, the site will direct students to call 911!
