PHS Student Crime Stoppers attended the dedication of the "Trooper Jeffrey Nichols Memorial Highway." Area officials, law enforcement agencies, and residents gathered at the intersection of Lamar Avenue and 42nd Street SE on Tuesday to pay tribute to Trooper Nichols.
Highway 82 from the 4200 Block of Lamar Ave. to the Red River County line is named in his honor. Nichols was killed in the line of duty on March 26 when he veered off of FM 38 near Tigertown and crashed into a tree.
"We want our students to understand the dangers law enforcement officers face each day. This will be both a permanent marker and memory they can share with their family and friends now and in the future," said Officer Joey McCarthy, PHS Crime Stopper advisor.
