More than 100 guests arrived at Aikin Elementary School on Wednesday for the dedication of the Pat Gilbert Library – named in honor of a respected principal.
Superintendent Paul Jones and the Board of Trustees discussed naming an Aikin facility after the beloved educator. “The Board agreed the library would be the most fitting tribute. Mrs. Gilbert is a humble and selfless leader who puts students and staff before herself.”
Gilbert retired in August after 24 years as Aikin’s principal. A proponent of teaching children to read at an early age, she is known across the state of Texas as a champion of reading.
David Stevens, Assistant Principal, conducted the ceremony and noted, “During her tenure here, she touched the lives of over 21,000 students. Her passion for reading success is an inspiration for us all. Look around this room. She was instrumental in the student friendly castle, the kid friendly décor, and she implemented our successful Reach the Reader Program. Her influence will continue here for decades to come.”
A reception in her honor followed the dedication ceremony.
Her family was well-represented at the event. Pictured with her grandsons, son and daughter-in-law, and husband are from left Bentley, Seanda, Logan, Tom, Norm, and Keeton Gilbert.
